Bring Jose Home
The Foundation assisted a group of Sugar Hill/Franconia
residents, surrounding communities and the
Lincoln/Woodstock Police departments in coordinating
numerous fundraising events to assist the Jose
Pequeno family. Jose Pequeno, who was the Police
Chief of Sugar Hill and a National Guardsman, was
severely wounded while serving in Iraq in 2006. The
family of Chief Pequeno sought assistance in modifying
their home for his return. Due to the nature of the
existing home, the Bring Jose Home committee determined
that a new home was needed. Over $250,000
in cash and gifts were raised through the efforts of
many. The committee constructed a fully handicapped
accessible 1,800 square foot house with oversized
garage to accommodate the return of Chief Pequeno.
The existing home was refurbished and sold with the proceeds
paying off the mortgage. The Foundation continues to provide
the family of Chief Pequeno support as needed including funds
for the education of Chief Pequeno’s children.
Corporal Bruce McKay
The Foundation was utilized by the family of Corporal
Bruce McKay who was killed in the line of duty while
serving as a police officer for the Town of Franconia.
The Foundation assisted with the public funeral ceremony
and the coordination of various benefits. Donations
received by the Fundation helped fund Corporal
McKay’s public funeral and support the financial future
of his young daughter, Courtney.
Whitefield EMT
The Foundation was contacted by the Whitefield Fire-
Rescue to assist them with helping one of their Firefighter/
EMT’s who recently lost her house and all its contents
in a terrible fire. The fire department held several fund
raisers to assist with immediate needs. The Foundation
provided guidance to the fire department and aided the
firefighter through the complicated process of contracting
for a new home and refinancing. The house was built and she and
her two children are now settled into their new home.
Firefighter Widow
The Foundation was approached by the widow of a
firefighter who requested assistance in managing her
financial affairs after the death of her husband. The
Foundation assisted the widow in reviewing all her
options, which resulted in her being able to meet her
financial obligations and plan for the future.
Sergeant Gerald
Berry
The Foundation assisted the State Police in seeking
donations to help the family of Sergeant Gerald Berry
who died from cancer at the age of 47. Donations were
utilized to fund the funeral, complete the in-process
project of building a barn, and establish a fund for the
secondary education of his son. To date, over $35,000 was raised
primarily through the efforts of Troop F and more is anticipated
to support a scholarship fund to be established in Gerald Berry’s
name.
